California-based startup Xona Space Systems announced a $170 million Series C funding round yesterday to aggressively scale its commercial GPS alternative. The capital injection will accelerate the deployment of the company’s Pulsar satellite constellation, designed to deliver highly precise, unhackable Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) signals globally.

Mohari Ventures and Natural Capital co-led the massive funding round. The investment syndicate also drew significant participation from major institutional players, including Craft Ventures, ICONIQ, Woven Capital, NGP Capital, Samsung Next, and Hexagon. This latest financial milestone represents a rapid escalation in backing for the company, arriving just months after Xona secured a $92 million Series B in June.

The Vulnerability of Legacy Navigation

Traditional GPS networks operate in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), transmitting signals over vast distances. These legacy systems face mounting vulnerabilities, ranging from natural atmospheric interference to intentional malicious disruptions. Global incidents of GPS spoofing and jamming have skyrocketed in recent years, threatening commercial aviation, maritime shipping, and military operations.

As the global economy becomes increasingly reliant on uninterrupted navigation data, the fundamental architecture of traditional PNT requires a robust, secure alternative. Xona spent the past several years engineering a solution in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to address these critical infrastructure gaps.

By operating closer to Earth, LEO satellites can transmit PNT signals that are exponentially stronger, more accurate, and significantly more secure than their MEO counterparts. Last year, the startup successfully broadcast a commercial satellite navigation signal from space for the first time, achieving record-breaking accuracy for commercial orbital navigation.

Scaling the Pulsar Constellation

With the core technology validated, Xona is transitioning rapidly into its scale-up phase. The company intends to build and deploy a comprehensive orbital network consisting of 258 LEO satellites. Engineers designed the Pulsar system to deliver centimeter-level positioning accuracy.

Furthermore, the physical proximity of the LEO constellation generates signals robust enough to penetrate complex environments. Unlike traditional GPS, which often fails indoors or in urban canyons, Xona’s signals are designed to reach devices deep inside commercial warehouses.

The push to commercialize LEO navigation infrastructure extends beyond enterprise applications; it represents a critical frontier in global technological sovereignty. Nations worldwide recognize the strategic vulnerability of relying solely on aging, state-owned GPS networks.

“Other countries are rapidly investing in next-generation positioning systems in LEO,” Xona CEO Brian Manning said in a public statement addressing the funding. “The question isn’t whether navigation infrastructure will evolve. It’s who builds it, and who controls it.”

Powering the Autonomous Economy

While secure navigation carries obvious defense implications, Xona is heavily targeting the massive commercial market. The company envisions its private PNT constellation as the foundational infrastructure for the next generation of automated technology. Modern industrial systems increasingly demand lossless, hyper-accurate GPS to function safely and efficiently.

Autonomous vehicles navigating city streets require instant, unjammable location data to prevent collisions. Similarly, automated agricultural machinery relies on precise positioning to optimize crop yields and minimize resource waste. Advanced robotics and drone delivery networks also depend entirely on resilient PNT signals to execute complex logistical operations.

To facilitate rapid market adoption, Xona engineered its technology to integrate seamlessly with existing hardware. End-users operating everyday commercial systems can often access the enhanced Pulsar network through a simple software update, eliminating the need for expensive hardware retrofits.

Global Expansion and Future Outlook

To support this global rollout, Xona is aggressively expanding its internal infrastructure. The Series C capital will directly fund the rapid expansion of the company’s product development, engineering, and supply chain divisions.

Deploying a 258-satellite constellation requires a massive, coordinated logistical effort. Xona is assembling an international network of manufacturing partners and suppliers across Europe and Asia. Simultaneously, the company is expanding its physical footprint, establishing and growing operational offices across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The commercial space industry will closely monitor Xona’s execution over the next twelve months as the company transitions from development to active deployment. The startup plans to launch its first operational United States satellites later this year, marking the beginning of the Pulsar network’s physical assembly. If successful, the rapid deployment of a private, unhackable PNT constellation will fundamentally disrupt the global navigation sector, paving the way for the widespread, secure adoption of autonomous technologies worldwide.
